WHY HIRE A LICENSED CONTRACTOR

Attorney Breeden, "Criminal penalties: In some cases, knowingly hiring an unlicensed subcontractor can lead to criminal charges."

In order to receive relief from the Virginia Contractor Transaction Recovery Act it must be proven:

  • The contractor was licensed
  • The eligible consumers “incurred some type of loss through the improper or dishonest conduct of a licensed residential contractor” through the Contractor Transaction Recovery Fund.

WHEN THEY ARE NOT A LICENSED CONTRACTOR

If a person identifies him/herself as a licensed contractor and it is discovered the person is not licensed, it is a violation of Virginia state law. Complaints/violations may be reported in multiple ways. An attorney can assist you in the best way to handle this. You can file a complaint with DPOR. It is important to report, but if you lost money, it will not get your money back.
